副總統領導的美國政府立刻陷入兩難的局面，因為釋放芮狄無疑是向恐怖分子低頭，同時也違背馬歇爾總統所發表的「絕不寬容」演說，並造成更多無辜人民的犧牲，但若不釋放，機上人質性命難保，將對美國政府造成極大的傷害。正無計可施之際，竟接到藏身在空軍一號的總統命令，絕不向恐怖分子妥協低頭。孤立無援的總統憑著對空軍一號各種精密設施的熟悉，獨自搏鬥瘋狂的恐怖分子。但是，為了保護自己的家人與名譽，這個曾經獲得榮譽勛章的美國總統，能否實現絕不寬容的諾言，進而拯救世界命運呢？
本片是近來好萊塢」總統電影熱」的繼續，但是，與」影子陰謀」」絕對權力」和」白宮謀殺案」等片截然不同的是，此番由哈里森福特扮演的美國總統不再是丑聞的中心，而是披上一件英雄的金色鎧甲，他臨危不亂，英勇善戰，看起來比去年比爾普爾曼在」獨立日」中飾演的總統更加威風凜凜。難怪現任美國總統比爾柯林頓會連看兩遍這部影片，並且只對」空軍一號」沒那麼先進提出了一點疑問，而對總統這一人物的真實性卻避而不談。本片也是德國籍導演沃爾夫岡彼得遜繼1993年的」火線追擊」之後再度觸及白宮題材的影片。

畢業後，曾在艾奧瓦州電台任體育節目播音員五年。1937年進入好萊塢華納兄弟電影公司開始影視演員的生涯。第二次世界大戰期間應征入伍，在美國空軍服役。退伍後重返好萊塢，在此後20多年的時間里，他曾先後在50部影片中擔任角色。1947年至1952年和1959年至1960年先後兩次任電影演員協會主席。1949年當選為電影業委員會主席。
里根早年參加民主黨。1962年，他改投共和黨，並在政壇嶄露頭角。1966年至1974年連任兩屆加利福尼亞州州長。1968年和1976年兩次爭取共和黨總統候選人的提名，但均未成功。1969年被選為共和黨州長協會主席。
1980年11月，里根再度競選總統獲勝，當選為美國第49屆總統，並於1981年1月20日宣誓就職。1984年11月，他競選連任成功，當選為美國第50屆總統，1989年1月，他結束總統任期。任職期間，里根對內積極推行經濟復興計劃，主張縮減政府規模和權力，減少稅收，降低通貨膨脹率和削減社會福利。在國際問題上，他提出戰略防禦計劃，對蘇聯採取強硬政策。里根與蘇聯領導人戈爾巴喬夫先後舉行4次首腦會談和會晤，並於1987年12月8日簽署了徹底銷毀和禁止兩國中程導彈條約。
里根卸任後，美國政府為表彰他在任期內所作出的貢獻，於1993年授予他總統自由勛章。1994年11月5日，里根通過電視向公眾宣布，他患了老年痴呆症，並從此淡出美國政壇。2002年5月16日，美國國會授予他金質獎章。2004年2月6日，美國加利福尼亞州決定將里根的生日定為「里根日」。
